Programs and Recreation

Activity is an essential part of an individual’s life whether recreational or occupational.

Banwell Gardens Care Centre delivers excellent programming for residents with varying stages of abilities. Our Programs team has developed a wide range of programming and services to engage residents of all ages.

 

Recreation programs offer the opportunity to build self-esteem, maintain social contacts and community relationships, develop new friendships, recreate past knowledge and create new learning opportunities that contribute to the well-being of the resident.

Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy

Banwell Gardens Care Centre offers a range of physiotherapy and rehabilitation services. There are also alternative therapies and restorative care programs available. Each new resident is assessed to determine an appropriate physiotherapy regime shortly after admission. Our objective is to maintain and restore residents’ current abilities and strengths through a variety of physical programs designed to meet individual needs.

Specialized Services

Our Nursing team believes in providing high quality care in order to meet the residents’ physical, social, emotional, intellectual, cultural and spiritual needs. We are committed to assist each resident in realizing his/her maximum potential. Interdisciplinary programs are developed to meet residents’ strengths, risks, needs and preferences using both in-house and community resources.

 

We actively provide ongoing training and educational programs to our team members, which will enhance personal and professional growth, recognizing that each team member is an important contributor to the resident care team. This assists us to achieve our goal of providing a resident-centred approach to care.

Skin Care and Wound Management Programs

Our Skin Care and Wound Management Program has been designed to provide the residents with services by an interdisciplinary care team with clinical knowledge and the tools to effectively assess, manage and evaluate skin condition.

Falls Prevention Program

Our Falls Prevention Program has been designed to effectively assess contributing factors that may place a resident at risk for a fall. The program identifies strategies aimed at the prevention or reduction of falls. It evaluates the effectiveness of each resident’s specific falls program. We have adapted the acronym FALLS to guide our program; Fall, Assessment, Long Term Actions, Learning and Safety.

Responsive Behaviour Program

Our Responsive Behaviour Program is based on delivering a holistic person-centered approach to care for residents who express unmet needs in response or reaction to external stimuli. The program uses a combination of approaches to address the well-being of the resident that in turn, will minimize distressed active expressions.  We also utilize supports such as in-house Behavioural Support Teams or those provided by the Ontario Health atHome to enhance our care delivery practices.

Continence Management Program

Our Continence Management Program is designed to effectively assess, manage/maintain and evaluate each resident’s level of continence employing clinical knowledge and tools. This support includes our continence product supplier who works in partnership with team members utilizing a restorative approach to allow maximum dignity and comfort for each resident.

Palliative/ End of Life Care Program

Our Palliative/End of Life Care Program has been designed to provide holistic palliative/end of life care to our residents and families. Our interdisciplinary care team’s philosophy focuses on providing maximum levels of comfort, pain and symptom management and support to the resident and family to ensure quality of life is maximized during this difficult time.

Personal Care Services

The Banwell Gardens Care Centre team recognizes the unique aspects of each resident and is committed to provide care and services that foster a culture of autonomy, diversity, and individual choice. The following list of services and programs are delivered in keeping with this philosophy in mind.

Primary Care Services

  • Weekly visits from physician(s) and on-call services at all times

  • Registered nursing care 24 hours a day

  • Diagnostic imaging, lab, and pharmacy services

  • Infection prevention and control program

  • Social work services including supportive counseling, discussion groups, advocacy, and financial management support

  • On-site laundry services

  • Daily housekeeping services

Culinary Services

At Banwell Gardens Care Centre our dietary team takes pride in preparing nutritious and delicious meals and snacks. We recognize the cultural diversity in our home by preparing foods that are familiar to our residents whenever possible.

 

Our Menu Development Team, composed of our Red Seal Chefs, Cooks, Food Service Managers, Registered Dietitians, Resident Councils and Programs Departments, works together to ensure our culinary services provide the highest quality, delicious and nutritious meals.

Our on-site Registered Dietitians evaluate residents’ nutritional status and plan their nutrition care. They assist in the development of special meals and snacks, make recommendations for supplements, and ensure that the individual dietary requirements of all residents are met.

 

Residents receive three (3) home-cooked meals each day as well as three (3) snacks / refreshments between meals.

Two (2) entrees are available for residents to choose from at each meal. Should a resident find neither option to their liking, a salad and sandwich of their choice is available. Meal times are scheduled at the same time each day, with flexibility provided to allow for residents to attend any scheduled appointments.

 

Guests are encouraged to join residents at any meal should they choose. Meal tickets can be purchased by guests from the Home at a low fee.
